    世界著名的美国希尔顿酒店管理院长为刘伟教授即将出版的新书《前厅与客房管理》(高等教育出版社,第三版),并寄语中国旅游院校学生。全文如下:

Preface


       The third edition of Managing Front Office and Housekeeping makes an important contribution to the advancement hospitality management. Travelers tell us the most important attribute a hotel can offer is a clean room. Often the first people to engage a guest are the front desk personnel. The front desk personal have to make sure the guest’s reservation details are correct and make sure the guest’s stay starts well. This text provides you with the knowledge you will need to make sure you have the knowledge and skills to make sure your guests will have a good stay and you will be able to manage efficiently and effectively. 

       Managing Front Office and Housekeeping is well organized. It covers all of the topics that one would expect in a book on this topic. It also includes chapters not often found in front office and housekeeping texts. For example there are two chapters on pricing and revenue management, a chapter on security, a chapter on communication and one on guest relations. The excellent organization of the text is due to the authors understanding of the hotel industry. He is in close communication with the management of international hotels and has included the latest methods used by these chains in this text. The readers will be well prepared to work in today’s rapidly changing hotel industry. 

       Professor Liu Wei is an experienced educator and author. His understanding of effective education is evidenced in the design of the book. To ensure students understand how to apply the principles in the text the author has included many case studies in each chapter. He has also  put a question at the beginning of each chapter called the “Manager’s Dilemma.” He then solicits ideas, responses, and answers from directors of the rooms division, front office managers, executive housekeepers, general managers and directors from international chains such as Shangrila and Intercontinental Hotels. The manager’s responses to these questions provide the reader with practical insights into hotel management.

Professor Liu Wei shares his know of hotel management on his website, WWW.Liuweihotel.com.  This website serves as a platform for college students and teachers to exchange ideas with hotel managers and to learn from each other. University instructors and students can find very useful teaching and learning resources on the website. They can also ask the author and the consultants of the website who are experienced hotel G.M.s any questions they have while studying this book. Finally, the website allows Professor Liu Wei to provide students and teachers with information on the latest trends in hotel management. This website is truly the work of someone who is dedicated to hospitality education. This is a great resource for a great book.

       As students of hotel management in China, you are entering a great industry in a great place. The hotel industry offers a variety jobs. If you like numbers you can practice revenue management or hotel accounting. For those that like creativity, food and beverage or event management provides an opportunity to be creative. If you like dealing with people, front office management or sales may be to your liking. For those that like attention to detail, housekeeping is an important area. No matter what you like to do, you can find a job in the hotel industry that fits your wants. The hotel industry in North America and Europe are mature with very slow growth. The hotel industry in China is booming there is not a better place in the world to be going into a career in the hotel industry. There is a great need for trained managers in China.
